World Leisure Organization (WLO) brought the leisure perspective into ENCATC’s 6th International Study Tour to the United Arab Emirates, which took participants to the cities of Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and Dubai from 14 to 17 March. Cristina Ortega Nuere, Chief Academic and Operating Officer, and Mireia Iglesias, Communication & Events Officer from WLO led the session “Talks on the Leisure Culture in the Emirates”, which also counted on the participation of Nasif Kayed, Founder and CEO of The Arab Culturalist. With his inspiring and provocative speech, Mr. Kayed questioned the audience on several traditions and cultural matters in the UAE. This dynamic session was an excellent opportunity to know more about the Leisure Culture in the region, but also to exchange international perspectives on leisure.
WLO also contributed to the extension of the Study Tour life by providing an online platform that allowed participants to become familiar with the program and the speakers before their trip, but also to stay connected and keep on gaining knowledge after the event. WLO wants to further increase the impact of its work by offering education opportunities through online platforms.
The Study Tour aimed at discovering and debating the question of culture in the Gulf Countries through a wide range of activities that included study visits, lectures and one seminar. The profile of participants was equally diverse, with more than 40 people from different countries and backgrounds – from artists to representatives of the EU Delegation to the UAE, universities, cultural organizations, cultural networks, museums, festivals, art foundations, national and regional public authorities. This resulted in a highly enriching 4-days exchange, as well as an unparalleled opportunity to develop ties with culture and leisure agents in the region.
The active participation in this activity expresses WLO’s determination to engage in collaboration with other networks in the field of culture, tourism, sports and recreation, in order to join efforts for consolidating the placement of leisure on the international agenda.
