A bid from the City of Malmö, Sweden to host the 2005 World Leisure European Regional Conference was approved by the Board of Directors at its recent Vancouver meeting. The Conference is scheduled for May 23-27, 2005, with the theme of "Leisure and the Young Migrant: Identity, Integration and Community".
The conference will address what the world has long experienced - the movement of persons across national and regional boundaries, caused by various political, economic and religious forces.

The consequences for both outbound and inbound communities have been profound. Currently, the communities of Europe are endeavouring to cope with the consequences of migration at unprecedented levels. Consequently, in pursuing social, cultural and economic development, cities and towns face such issues as identity, poverty, employment, cultural diversity, discrimination, integration and citizenship.

Malmö has a diverse population of people from all over the world, with 160 nationalities speaking over 100 different languages. The City uses leisure planning and leisure activities as a method to build a better municipality and community. Thus, the central thrust will be: "Can leisure play a role in dealing with many different cultures and with the young migrant?" The aim of the conference will be to promote a better understanding of the diversity of different cultures, help to eliminate all forms of discrimination, and promote equality at all levels in society, with a focus on the UN´s Declaration of Human Rights.
