Leisure
and Human Development
The
6th World Leisure Congress of the World Leisure
and Recreation Association was held in Bilbao,
Spain, hosted by the Institute of Leisure Studies
of the University of Deusto.
The Congress provided a forum for discussion and reflection
upon leisure as a context for individual and social development.
As we enter the new millennium, the world pauses to look
both backward and forward, what have we learned from the
past and what must be done in the future. Leisure is no
exception.
Thus, the Congress addressed the potentialities for human
development through leisure at a time when we seem to
have fallen short of creating the best conditions for
optimising the quality of life for all, despite the astonishing
achievements of science and technology. To address the
issue properly required a broad range of approaches.
Therefore, the role of leisure in human development was
considered from both individual and collective perspectives.
More specifically, how do leisure experiences enhance
or diminish personal development and well being, and how
do organised and institutionalised leisure affect communities,
states and relations among them?
Following the successful 5th Congress in São Paulo,
Brazil,The World Leisure Congress 2000 featured exhibitions,
a trade show, and a full social and cultural program.
Congress 2000 was an integral part of Bilbao's dual celebration:
The new Millennium and the city's 700th anniversary.
